"Beer joint with pub food worth the trip"
From the Editors 1/06:
Just a safe distance away from the Meatpacking District, Woody McHale's offers neighbors and newcomers something a lot less fancy and a lot more real. Literally encased in wood, embracing the cabin-like exterior leftover from the previous tenant, this local watering hole caters to a mixed crowd looking for a cold drink, a jukebox full of classic rock and space for a decent conversation. The owners are the same people behind Frank's butcher shop in Chelsea Market, and with chef Segundo Juca in the kitchen, the meat-laden menu becomes a happy intersection of the two. Mouth-watering dishes include a surprisingly good Philly cheese steak, and other stick-to-yer-ribs dishes like mac 'n' cheese, skirt steak stuffed with mushrooms and bacon, a big bowl of chili doused with homemade cheese sauce, and Woody's double burger with waffle fries, all of which go really well with a reliably cheap Guinness draft. Finish it all off with Doug's fried Twinkie and let the diet start tomorrow. -- ------Ashley Lederer

......Meat and cheese in ample amounts are also the most-requested fare at Woody McHale's, where owner Steven Molinari says the chili is popular because it's, well, all-inclusive meat!
"People love our chili with the homemade blue chips, because it has no beans," Molinari says. "Customers always tell me that this is a great chili because it is made only with beef and with pork, and you don't find that very often."
His Philly cheesesteak (again, the meat and cheese theme comes into play) is also quite a seller on Super Bowl Sunday.
And vegetables are scarce in the Super Bowl snack from PS450, where Dominic Giuliano is the chef. His deep-fried potato poppers are far from health food, because they're made with bacon, eggs and two kinds of cheese.
But Super Bowl Sunday's not about eating healthy. It's about eating with your hands, eating while standing (if need be) and, above all, being with family, friends and fellow football fans. (Not necessarily in that order!)

Had a great time
A few of my friends and I were in Lower Manhattan hanging out and we happened upon this place. At first we were just going to grab a fast bite to eat then leave for other destinations. The food was great. An hour stop turned into a full nights hang. We met the owner doug, he made us feel right at home. The bar is cool with an old tavern feel. The crowd was friendly, we had great conversations and drinks were reasonable. So I wanted to give a shout out to the people at Woody's and say I’ll be back soon.
Pros: food

-------------------------------------------Finally!!!
It isnt easy to find a place like this anymore in Manhattan amidst all the Lounges, Clubs and overpriced "fusion" fare, so I will keep it simple, just like Woody's; Great inexpensive food, amazing Burgers (unreal Veggie Burgers too!), great Specialty Martini's for only $10 (!!!), and a very "nice" crowd of mostly mid 20's to late 40's, hanging out having a good time, and no attitude from the female bartenders. What else could you ask for?
Pros: Food, No attitude, Specialty Martinis

A New Yorker's Oasis

If another wine bar with tapas opens in my gentrified city i'm moving. Woody McHales brings all the elements of a bar & grill back to the neighborhood. Best burger in NY, Cheesesteaks like the old town(I think the owner is from Philly), reasonable beer prices with the perfect complement of drinks for the women. the vibe makes it cool for a date, an after work or end of night "last call". What more could you want? Chocolate covered deep fried twinkies! Dude, deep fried twinkies!!! It's places like Woody McHales that make me want to be known as "the regular".

An interior of knotty pine boards lends this spot the heartiness of a cabin, brightened by a couple of TVs and red light bulbs up front. An adjusting of the eyes to the darkness in the dining area, where rows of tables accommodate groups of up to six, reveals the menu's heightened rendition of pub fare: Owners Douglas Solokoff and Steven Molinari are partners in Frank's Restaurant and Butcher Shop a few blocks away, hence a Philly Cheese Steak that riffs on the classic with homemade cheese sauce and juicy chopped beef cut from the rib (oddly, the sauteed onions only come by request). Double burgers, stuffed skirt steak, hot dogs and pastrami keep the menu beefy all night long, along with waffle-cut fries that are a thicker, tougher version of potato chips. Specialty cocktails like Strawberry Shortcake, Cherry Coke and Root Beer Float, made with root beer liqueur that has a pleasant scent but bitter finish, are priced higher than the simple décor would imply, but the Guinness remains a deal, and the decade-spanning rock soundtrack pleases guests ranging from their twenties to forties.—Karen Hudes
